As the medicinal and recreational psilocybin industry begins to blow up, we vendors need to be vigilant over the accuracy of information we provide consumers about this invaluable medicine.
We keep a watchful eye on the psilocybin market, and we see new online dispensaries pop up every week. We read the information presented on these sites to see what shop owners are sharing about their products and about psilocybin in general. The amount of misinformation we have uncovered has become a primary concern, and has necessitated this post.
It is our main goal at GVT to help educate and inform the public on the safe, effective use of psychedelic medicines. We want individuals to be empowered to take their health into their own hands. In order to do that, people need to be equipped with accurate information.
There are numerous dispensaries selling mushroom chocolates online. We will not name any in particular, but we have noticed a pattern between many of these shops when it comes to the listing of psilocybin content in their chocolate bars. Ingredients report anywhere from 0.3-350 milligrams of psilocybin per individual piece of chocolate.
The average concentration of psilocybin in Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms, which is the main species used to make mushroom chocolates, is 0.6-0.7%. This means that in 1 gram of mushrooms, there is an average of 6-7 milligrams of psilocybin. We converted the amount of psilocybin listed in each chocolate bar to the amount of dried, ground mushrooms it would equate to, which resulted in a range from 3g-712g – a massive discrepancy.
We assume that this is the result of innocent ignorance by some producers who actually meant to cite the amount of dried, ground mushrooms used in their chocolate bars as opposed to psilocybin content. However, it is uninformed marketing like this that leads to confused customers and potential health and safety risks.
To help clear up some of the confusion around the amount of psilocybin in mushroom chocolate bars, we have created the chart below. If the bar you are looking to purchase lists the amount of psilocybin per individual piece, it should mirror the amounts listed in Column B. If the numbers specified are closer to those in Column A, then it is likely the producer has listed the amount of dried, ground mushrooms in that piece, not psilocybin content.
Column A | Column B |
Milligrams of Dried, Ground Mushrooms Per Piece | Milligrams of Psilocybin Per Piece |
50 | 0.3-0.35 |
100 | 0.6-0.7 |
150 | 0.9-1.05 |
200 | 1.2-1.4 |
250 | 1.5-1.75 |
300 | 1.8-2.1 |
350 | 2.1-2.45 |
400 | 2.4-2.8 |
450 | 2.7-3.15 |
500 | 3-3.5 |
As we navigate this new paradigm of integrating psychedelic medicines into society, it becomes increasingly important for all of us to do as much research as possible to become experts on our own health, and to speak up when we notice misinformation being perpetuated.
We sincerely hope that vendors practice their due diligence and educate themselves first before attempting to benefit financially from the sale of these sacred medicines.
